Microsoft Defender Scan

Step 1: Run a Microsoft Defender Offline Scan

The offline scan is the most effective built-in method because it restarts your PC and runs outside of the normal Windows environment, allowing it to catch deep-seated malware that tries to hide while the OS is running.

  1. Press the Windows Key, type Windows Security, and open the app.

  2. Click on Virus & threat protection.

  3. Click on Scan options (under the Quick scan button).

  4. Select Microsoft Defender Offline scan.

  5. Click Scan now. Your PC will restart and run the scan (this takes about 15–30 minutes).

Step 2: Run a Full System Scan

After your PC reboots, perform a deeper check of every file and folder on your drives.

  1. Return to Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options.

  2. Select Full scan.

  3. Click Scan now. (Note: This scan can take anywhere from an hour to several hours depending on your drive speed and amount of data).

Step 3: Check for Residual Threats & Unwanted Apps

Malware often leaves behind junk apps, rogue browser extensions, or persistence mechanisms.

  • Installed Apps: Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, sort by installation date, and uninstall any unfamiliar or suspicious programs.

  • Startup Programs: Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, go to the Startup apps tab, and disable anything unrecognized.

  • Browsers: Check your browser extensions in Chrome or Edge and remove anything you didn't install yourself. If your settings are hijacked, go to your browser's settings and choose Reset settings / Restore settings to original defaults.

Bitwarden has rapidly earned a reputation as one of the best password managers available today. Here is why switching to Bitwarden is a smart move for protecting your online identity.
